You wouldn't take skydiving lessons from someone who has never been in an airplane, so why would you ask for advice on commuting by bicycle all winter from someone who drives a car to work everyday?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking anyone working at a bicycle shop about their personal experiences in cycling. Before you begin building a long-term relationship with any bicycle shop, it is important that you are confident they have the experience, education, and resources to help you make the best decisions for your individual needs.
